Games Against Stoke City Women
Both our First Team and Development Team played against Stoke City Women last Sunday, in the first round of fixtures of The Pygott & Crone Cup.
It was a tough week for both teams, as both fixtures ended in defeats for the Foxes. However, it was another good 90 mins after such a long time out and there were a lot of positives to take.
Stoke got off to a decent start, with two chances inside the first 10 minutes. The second chance resulted in a shot from 30 yards, but Foxes goalkeeper, Holly Mayfield, did well to hold the dipping effort.
Then, it was Foxes turn to dominate. Their excellent pressing all over the pitch led to several good chances. Shots from Emily Brett and Mia Walters were well defended by Stoke’s defence, as they kept the game at 0-0.
Just after the half-hour mark, Stoke went ahead, against the run of play. A Stoke shot was brilliantly cleared off the line by Ce Webb but it fell to a City player who prodded home from just a yard out.
It was more of the same at the start of the second half, as Foxes pushed hard to get back into the game. Their pressing, energy and heart was excellent.
11 second-half minutes, though, took the game away from Foxes. The match ended 4-0 to Stoke City.
After 126 days – 4 months – away from the football pitch, the Development team finally made it back.
In a tournament to mirror the First Team’s, the Devs played against Stoke City Women Reserves.
The game ended in a 4-1 defeat for the Devs but, more importantly, it was a good run-out to shake off any cobwebs. It was great to see the team back out there!
It was a great weekend for the Foxes junior teams. 2 wins, 1 draw and more minutes for our talented youngsters made it an incredibly successful weekend.
Well done to all involved and thank you to the parents and volunteers for your continued efforts and support.
The results were as follows:
